Time has stood still in Mesa Verde, a troglodyte stone city perched on the high desert plateaus of Colorado, erected centuries ago by an ancient Native American people. These first inhabitants understood how to tame its hostile ocher earth – arid in summer, frozen in winter – transforming it into shelter, into a generous soil. Here, fields of nourishing crops, sun-ripened maize, beans and grains, stretched as far as the eye could see, soft as wheat and golden as the rays that darted about on the horizon.
