Reimagine: Using Makeup to Express Yourself and Create Beauty on Your Terms

Looking back through the decades, each era has had its own iconic beauty moment—from the Cupid bow lips of the ‘20s to the winged eyeliner of the ‘50s and the glitter-filled ‘70s. Makeup trends have always mirrored their times, offering a snapshot of cultural shifts. Fast forward to 2024, and we find ourselves in an era that celebrates individuality, diversity, and inclusivity. Makeup has become a creative playground where breaking the rules is the new norm and self-expression is everything.

Today, makeup is no longer just about convenience or covering imperfections. It’s about embracing your uniqueness, reflecting your values, showcasing your personality, matching your mood, exploring new trends, and, most importantly, having fun! Let’s dive into some of the latest daring beauty trends and explore how makeup has become a powerful tool for self-expression.

The Evolution of Makeup

There was a time when makeup was all about practicality — covering imperfections, adding a pop of colour, and calling it a day. While that sounds about right for a Monday morning, we’re no longer stuck in that box anymore. Feeling audacious? Want to reflect that effortless vibe? Grab a brush and show it! Makeup offers you the tools to give the world a glimpse of who you are and how you want to express yourself. Whether you’re adding a little sparkle to your eyes, trying out the Cherry Cola lip, bleaching your brows, or perfecting the no-makeup makeup, it’s all about doing you and making a statement that’s uniquely your own!

“Makeup has evolved into such a powerful form of self-expression! Bold colours like neons and pastels and textures like gloss and glitter are some examples of how someone can incorporate some uniqueness and individuality to a makeup look,” said Alana Alper, makeup artist and one-half of the beauty duo, the Alper Sisters.

Shine Bright Like a Diamond

Oh, how I miss those bedazzled days! Lucky for us, rhinestones, pearls, and glitter have gone beyond just hair and clothes and become the latest must-have accessories for your face! This whimsical trend has made a comeback from the Y2K era, and it’s not just for Osheaga weekend. Jazz up a more contemporary look with a few pearls along your lashes, or rock rhinestone cat eyes with a modern, slicked-back hairdo.

“Embellishments are a great way to elevate your personal style and make a bold statement. You can elevate a simple makeup look or go all the way and really have a fun editorial moment. It goes back to self-expression, showing off your personality, and adopting a fun and playful side to your makeup routine!” Said Alper.

50 Shades of Lipstick

We love a vibrant red or a soft peach lip as much as the next person — they’re timeless, flattering, and always stunning. But why stop there? Beauty brands are catching on to the self-expression wave and introducing metallic tints, glittery glosses, and bold backs, giving you endless options to match your mood.

"Playing with colour or texture draws attention to that area of the face and makes your lips the focal point of your makeup look. It's also a fun way to coordinate your makeup look with your outfit or to create contrast and balance within a look," said Alper.

Beyond Basic Black

From Cleopatra’s iconic cat eye to Avril Lavigne’s signature smoky look to Emma Stone’s red carpet kitten flick, it’s fair to say black liner has always been a staple in our makeup bags. But now, it’s time to toss in a few more crayons into the mix. Whether you’re feeling a neon blue graphic arrow or a soft pastel to brighten your look, there’s a rainbow of hues to play with! It’s time to let your eyes do the talking!

Nailing It!

Nail art has come a long way since the days of sheer pink and French manis – arguably the biggest trend in beauty right now. From “glazed donuts” to rainbow chrome to aura effects, nail art has become the ultimate form of self-expression. While past trends have focused on shades and shapes, today’s nail artists are experimenting with texture, using 3D gel to create intricate designs or adding 3D nail jewellery for that extra wow factor. Inspired by the creativity of Japanese and Korean trends, today’s nail art is about pushing the boundaries and making a statement.
